Adopted standard

ISO/IEC 42001 (AI Management Systems)

Ethotechnics-style critique of ISO/IEC 42001 and its management-system approach to AI governance.

Ethotechnics read

Certified effort vs. governable systems

Management-system audits can miss whether systems are stoppable mid-incident.

Overview

What it is

A management-system standard for establishing and improving AI governance policies and processes.

ISO/IEC 42001 specifies how organizations set up, implement, and maintain an AI management system, including roles, policies, objectives, and continual improvement cycles.

Ethotechnics critique

Where the standard falls short

  • Governance effort ≠ governability: Audits can certify documented controls while the system remains hard to stop mid-incident.

  • Continuous improvement can normalize slow harm: “We’re improving” can coexist with multi-quarter remediation cycles in high-stakes contexts.

  • Artifacts over interruption capacity: Documentation, training, and lifecycle governance are easier to evidence than tested rollback authority.

Failure mode

Certified responsibility + unresolved time-in-harm

Well-managed organizations can still leave users stuck in harm windows.

The failure mode is a system that passes audits while users still cannot compel reversal on a clock.
