Corporate Responsible AI Programs

Ethotechnics-style critique of internal responsible AI principles, ethics boards, and review gates.

Ethotechnics read

Ethics theater under pressure

Internal governance rarely grants stop rights to affected parties.

Overview

What they are

Internal principles, review boards, and monitoring programs derived from broad ethics frameworks.

Corporate responsible AI standards typically combine principles (fairness, transparency, safety) with committees, review gates, training, and monitoring.

Ethotechnics critique

Where the programs fall short

  • Centralized review becomes a bottleneck: At scale, boards either slow the business or become routinized and symbolic.
  • Judgment-based governance is fragile: Under deadline pressure, discretionary controls degrade first while the system keeps running.
  • The affected party lacks standing: Governance is inward-facing, not power the public can exercise.

Failure mode

Ethics theater under pressure

Good principles and sincere people without enforceable stop rights downstream.

The failure mode is a well-intended program that collapses into symbolic oversight when incentives conflict with restraint.
