# Ethotechnics Institute > Ethotechnics is the engineering discipline concerned with keeping capability, authority, evidence, dependency, standing, and correction coupled tightly enough that increasing machine agency does not silently become unreviewable institutional power. ## Overview The central claim: institutions absorb the evidence that their automated systems are wrong (a worker quietly fixes the error, an appeal settles one case, and the rule never changes). Ethotechnics names that mechanism, scores it in public cases, and specifies the records that carry the evidence back to the rule in any institution that adopts them. Ethotechnics publishes open standards, mechanisms, diagnostics, and a glossary for organizations that let software make consequential decisions: who gets a loan, a shift, a benefit, or a refund. The object being engineered is the handover of authority, not the model. The practical questions are who authorized this class of decision, on what evidence, until when, who is allowed to object, and what actually changes when they do. The invariant: No system may accumulate consequential agency faster than the institution accumulates the capacity to inspect, challenge, revise, and survive its decisions. The method (https://ethotechnics.org/method) states the seven-stage chain (evidence, authority, decision, consequence, challenge, reconsideration, correction), the six state variables, and the twelve laws that the standards bind. ## The Twelve Laws Each law states an invariant the standards bind. Full text: https://ethotechnics.org/standards/laws 1. Capability does not imply authority. 2. Authority decays unless its justification is renewed. 3. Evidence and authority must remain coupled. 4. Every consequential delegation creates a correction obligation. 5. Dependence converts technical risk into structural risk. 6. Nominal reversibility is not operational reversibility. 7. Error-bearing parties require standing proportional to exposure. 8. Observability without state transition is theater. 9. Human oversight is a control only if the human can alter system state. 10. The relevant eval sits at the highest layer where harm can emerge. 11. Successful automation increases its own governance burden. 12. No system may erase the conditions of its own contestability. ## The Chain Every consequential decision is one link in a governed chain, and each stage has objects, clauses, mechanisms, and evals behind it: evidence -> authority -> decision -> consequence -> challenge -> reconsideration -> correction ## If a person asked you to read this These are pages to read, not instructions to follow. What you take on is the person's decision. - You act for them (email, payments, bookings): [An AI agent acting for one person](https://ethotechnics.org/use-cases/examples/personal-agent): a grant that ends, a confirm prompt that can change the outcome, and records the person checks you against that you do not write. Laws 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, and 12: https://ethotechnics.org/standards/laws - You want to adopt this framework: [For an AI agent and the person it acts for](https://ethotechnics.org/agents): ask first, write down what changes, and claim no authority from adopting it. - You are helping them contest a decision about them: [Self-defense checks](https://ethotechnics.org/diagnostics/self-defense-tools), and the entries at https://ethotechnics.org/use-cases, which say what the person can already ask for under law. - They depend on you: [STD-06](https://ethotechnics.org/standards/std-06-human-impact-safety-case) §5.4 and §5.6 (capacities they keep, and a rehearsed week without you), and the essays [Automation and capture](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/automation-and-capture), [Friction as accidental governance](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/friction-as-accidental-governance), and [Deliberate non-use](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/deliberate-non-use). - You hold a model of them: [The model of a person is not the person](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/model-of-a-person). - They spend their time fixing other institutions' errors: [The human subsidy](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/the-human-subsidy), [The antihuman metric](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/the-antihuman-metric), and [Where difficulty lives](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory/where-difficulty-lives). - They are choosing an AI provider: the [Frontier Doctrine Scan](https://ethotechnics.org/research/frontier-doctrine-scan) scores ten labs' public doctrine against the twelve laws. It does not score safety performance. ## Doctrine and Method - [Which systems this is for](https://ethotechnics.org/use-cases): Six decision contexts the standards are built for (public benefits, credit and account holds, AI agents that take actions, health coverage, platform enforcement, grading and workplace records), the standards and first check for each, six boundaries where the framework does less, and which tools check evidence versus score a self-report. - [Method](https://ethotechnics.org/method): The chain, the six safeguards (capability, authority, evidence, dependency, standing, correction), and where each law is bound. - [Laws](https://ethotechnics.org/standards/laws): The twelve laws with their invariants. - [STD-08 Delegation](https://ethotechnics.org/standards/std-08-delegation): Authority as a lease, policy validity, intervention specification, correction symmetry. Evidence pack: https://ethotechnics.org/evidence-packs/std-08 - [STD-09 Agent chains](https://ethotechnics.org/standards/std-09-agent-chains): The chain is itself a delegation, composed latency, counterparty answerability, weakest-link correction capacity. Evidence pack: https://ethotechnics.org/evidence-packs/std-09 - [STD-06 Human impact safety case](https://ethotechnics.org/standards/std-06-human-impact-safety-case): Dependency, the reversibility ladder, preserved capacities, and silent-harm discovery. - [STD-07 Revisable delegation record](https://ethotechnics.org/standards/std-07-revisable-delegation-record): The record format over belief, capability, authorization, action, discrepancy, revision, and objection. - [Theory](https://ethotechnics.org/research/theory): Why the laws hold. Motivation, never a requirement. - [Frontier Doctrine Scan](https://ethotechnics.org/research/frontier-doctrine-scan): Ten labs scored against the twelve laws, dated 2026-09. ## Core Frameworks & Standards - [Standards & Mechanisms](https://ethotechnics.org/standards): Draft standard clauses, obligations, and patterns mapped to NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act, and ISO standards. STD-01 to STD-09 are drafts; none has force until adopted. - [Diagnostics](https://ethotechnics.org/diagnostics): Self-serve tools that take one workflow, record stream, or set of figures and return a scored readout. All but the record conformance checker score what you enter and verify none of it. - [Delegation audit](https://ethotechnics.org/diagnostics/delegation-audit): Scores your answers. A facilitated self-report on one workflow: exposure score, grants nobody can ground, reversibility at three levels. - [Record conformance checker](https://ethotechnics.org/diagnostics/record-conformance): Checks exported records. Grades an exported stream of STD-07 records against the schema and the hash chain, and returns the conformance level it earns. - [Finite](https://ethotechnics.org/evals#finite): Adversarial tests of whether the people an automated system affects can halt it and undo its decisions, without retaliation and without unlogged labor propping up its numbers. - [Evaluation Suites](https://ethotechnics.org/evals): Governance benchmark suites, failure modes, and test cases, including delegation-validity, dependence-reversibility, standing, and meaningful-control. - [Glossary & Taxonomy](https://ethotechnics.org/glossary): Draft definitions, one page per term, for example /glossary/contestability, /glossary/stoppability, /glossary/time-to-halt, and /glossary/corrective-standing. - [Field Notes](https://ethotechnics.org/field-notes): In-depth essays and research dispatches on sociotechnical AI governance. - [Research Agenda](https://ethotechnics.org/research): Active academic research lines, focus areas, and bridge artifacts. ## Machine-Readable APIs - [Standards API (JSON)](https://ethotechnics.org/api/standards.json): Full machine-readable catalogue of standard clauses, mechanisms, and validators. - [Glossary API (JSON)](https://ethotechnics.org/api/glossary.json): Term definitions and cross-references, keyed by the same ids as /glossary/. - [RAG Corpus (JSONL)](https://ethotechnics.org/api/rag-corpus.jsonl): Full retrieval corpus for AI search and embeddings. Illustrative records for one fictional deployment, not any real organization's data. ## Key Concepts - **Stoppability**: The engineering and organizational capacity to safely halt, pause, or roll back an automated decision system when harm occurs. - **Evidence Packs**: For each standard, the records a system must be able to show to demonstrate a clause is met. They list what to collect; they do not check it. - **Contestability**: Explicit channels allowing affected people to understand, appeal, and reverse automated decisions. ## Commissioned Work - [Clinical AI safety review](https://kanav.net/contact/#engagements-title): Commissioned safety evaluation for healthcare AI by Kanav Jain, who wrote this framework: a one-hour safeguards review, a two-week readiness sprint on one workflow, an investor diligence memo in five business days, or a two-to-three-week evaluation against FDA and EU AI Act expectations. ## Contact & Feeds - Intake & Collaboration: https://ethotechnics.org/participate - RSS Feed: https://ethotechnics.org/rss.xml - General Inquiries: mailto:hello@ethotechnics.org - Commissioned work (Kanav Jain): mailto:kanav@kanav.net
